Realizing a Dream

Swannelle Wiggins always had big dreams, but never believed they would come to fruition. As a young girl, Swannelle wanted to be an author and even considered writing a children’s book. When she was young, Swannelle saw her brother sketch Snoopy, picked up a pencil, and the rest is history; her love for art was born. She recalls drawing for school projects and utilizing her drawing skills, but never pursued art seriously. Instead she held her artistic passions on the back burner. She attended paint parties, but it wasn’t until 2016 that she delved into creating her own original painting. She hasn’t put a paint brush down since then.

A period of unemployment became a blessing in disguise. Swannelle was able to focus on her art and business full time, something she says gives her energy and inspiration. She began crafting handmade beaded jewelry in 2010. She created Swannluv Creations, began selling her beaded jewelry, started hosting paint parties, and attended art festivals and other vending opportunities. In spring 2019, she participated in an art expo at the Bungalow Ale House.

Swannelle says a pivotal momement came when she was bowling in Woodbridge, VA. She casually showed another bowler a photo of her paintings. The patron was so moved by the painting, they immediately asked to purchase it. Swannelle was completely shocked; she’d never been paid for a piece before. She explained further that it gave her such an amazing sense of accomplishment and pride that her work could connect to someone else so strongly. This interaction encouraged her to take her art more seriously.

After nearly a year of contemplation, Swannelle surprised her entire family by announcing her upcoming coloring book journal entitled “Inspired by Love” on Saturday August 29th. The images pay homage to African American women. All the artwork in the coloring book journal will be original. Swannelle says she plans to release the journal in Spring 2021. The pre-order sales are available now. She hopes the book inspires everyone to take time out of their busy day to quiet their minds, recenter, and reflect. She wants to encourage people to find a way to express themselves through art therapy and journaling.

Swannelle is extremely grateful for her family and friends’ support; She is excited to be following her dreams and, most importantly, to show her sons that they can achieve theirs. Swannelle actively tries to encourage young artists who are afraid to commit time to their artistic passions. She explained that the things which give you life, those are what you’re supposed to do. They make you feel alive. She goes on to say that it’s important to create a sense of pride in young artists. During in-person paint parties, she has invited young artists to sell their art and give them exposure.

As an artist, Swannelle said she’s often inspired by her environment whether that be a person she meets, an ice cream shop, or current events. When asked about police violence against the Black community she responded by painting “Strange Fruit.”

“Strange Fruit”

When addressing difficult topics, Swannelle states that she unleashes her pain using art and releases it to God. She strongly believes that God has given her all the gifts she needs and feels a duty to use it and be blessed. “If I’m not releasing my art for other people and giving my gift, do I really have the faith I’m supposed to have?” Swannelle has placed her faith in God and fearlessly chased her dream to be a published author and artist. She’s ecstatic to be sharing her paintings, committing to her art full time, and re-launching her Etsy store.

Swanelle’s story is proof that it’s never too late to devote time to your dreams, to achieve what you never thought possible, and to use your gifts to bless others. We’re overjoyed to share Swannelle’s work and hope you will continue your support.
