Del. Michelle Maldonado (D-50) announced the filing of her first piece of legislation in the Virginia General Assembly on Wednesday.

Maldonado’s first bill, HB 893, requires that landlords notify tenants of rent increases no less than 30 days before an automatic renewal takes place. Currently, landlords can give a notice of 30 days for increased rent. According to Maldonado, this represents a lack of adequate time for tenants to pursue alternative housing options, and this can add an increased burden to families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet.

“We have an opportunity and responsibility to create ongoing solutions for our constituents as we address issues of affordable housing across our Commonwealth,” Maldonado said in a press release. “This bill will allow the notice period for rent increases from 30 to 60 days, giving tenants more time to make their housing decisions and arrangements. As well as for landlords to efficiently manage occupancy and vacancy rates. My hope is that this step will be among many that will continue to support the good work we are doing to help Virginia families thrive.”

Maldonado has expressed that she strongly believes in supporting measures to alleviate the economic stress and financial burden placed on Virginians. She also stated that rent increases and affordable housing are legislative priorities for her as she represents her district.

Among the other bills filed by Maldonado is HB 952, which would establish the Virginia African Diaspora Advisory Board, a new advisory board to provide guidance to the governor on ways to improve cultural links between Virginia and African nations.

Maldonado was elected to represent District 50 in the House of Delegates in the November general election. She succeeded former Del. Lee Carter, who she previously beat in the district’s June Democratic Primary.
