How the pandemic made one woman an entrepreneur

The pandemic brought a lot of loss, but there were also success stories, especially in the Black community and entrepreneurship.

Robin Hayes Wishom didn’t let the pandemic or losing her job stop her from fulfilling her dreams.

Robin shared with me how she started her business and includes a message for the community.

Tell us about your business

I created VazaRoma out of a love for scented candles, soaps, and natural body products, as well as products for the home. Health and wellness have always been my passion. All products are handmade by me with some help from my daughter. We guarantee all natural and organic products made with the highest level of excellence. The essential oils used in our candles and soaps are eco-friendly and offer many health benefits. When lit, each of our candles releases a strong yet balanced fragrance that lasts 40-60 hours or more, depending on size. Our candles come with either a braided cotton or special wooden wick. Both produce less smoke and do not contain zinc or lead.

What made you decide to start your business?

Several years ago, I created a vision board as part of a 3-year plan that included starting a business. I’ve always had an entrepreneur spirit and starting a business is something I can pass on to the next generation. Once the pandemic hit and my position as an association executive was eliminated, I moved forward with my vision of starting a business. Also, my daughter and family members were getting allergic reactions to some of the over-the-counter products and that really prompted me to do research and studied extensively on making safe products.

What services and/or products does your business provide?

We provide an array of products for the home and body. Such products as luxury handmade soaps, whipped body butter, creams, body scrub, body oil, hand poured candles, and home diffusers.

What is your message to other entrepreneurs?

To believe in the inevitability of your success and step out on faith! I always share and follow the 3 C’s in life, choices, chances, and changes. You must make a choice to take a chance if you want anything in life to change. And no matter what service or product you are providing, there is room for everyone.

How can people find you?

They can find out more about the business by going to my website at www.vazaroma.com and on Instagram and Facebook at @vazaroma4u or my email at vazaroma4u@gmail.com.
