Potomac District Supervisor Bailey meets with constituents to discuss issues

On Thursday evening at Potomac High School’s auditorium, Potomac District Supervisor Andrea Bailey provided an open forum for the local community to hear about the progress made in the district, and also to provide a glimpse into the future.

The theme for the town hall was “Where we were, Where we are now, and where we’re going,” it touched on a myriad of topics that have been worked upon over several months and in some cases, years. Joining her were several representatives from different offices. Among them were 2nd District Delegate Candi King, who praised Bailey’s work in helping Prince William County secure the Gander Mountain Facility for its upcoming Crisis Receiving Center.

“There has not been a bigger advocate for our community than Supervisor Bailey,” said King, who also talked briefly on the bills she is working to get passed within the General Assembly. In addition, she talked about how the ongoing budget discussions are still a work in progress.

Among the several topics discussed during the town hall were the updates on the Virginia Railway Express coming to the Potomac Shores area, economic development, and transportation. Another source of discussion was the Possum Point landfill expansion plans, which is scheduled to be completed by 2030. When asked about safety concerns, Bailey ensured that was the priority.

“Before we do anything, I want to ensure it’s safe,” said Bailey.

Another issue that has been of great concern was the rising crime rates, with approximately 20 homicides taking place in 2022. Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham discussed how 18 of those cases are closed, and they are addressing the shortage in police staff, with opening two more police academies. Bailey also talked about how they have created a Public Safety Committee to help make communities safer.

Potomac School Board Representative Justin Wilk spoke on the increase in full time security specialists in public schools, as well as raises for teachers in addition to additional stipends for Special Education instructors.

Bailey took questions from those in attendance, including on the traffic concerns with the incoming Rose casino opening in Dumfries later this year. She reiterated that she is working with Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood to address those concerns.

Afterward, she provided updates on the new shopping centers, including her desire to develop a dining establishment in Fortuna Center Plaza, and a Popeye’s in the new shopping center near the Grace Church location.

She concluded with encouraging the constituents to reach out with any questions they may have going forward. “Let’s go forward as we go through the district,” she stated.
