Virginia Cooperative Extension to host event to help renters
During the past two years, there have been several tenants who were able to remain in their homes due to federal and state protections. While the moratoriums have been lifted in other states, Virginia has been one of the few that kept protections for tenants, especially for those who were facing economic hardship. However, on June 30, those special protections will be lifted. Under Virginia law, landlords cannot evict tenants for non-payment of rent (for COVID hardship) unless they follow certain rules. The primary rule being that the landlord must give the renter a 14-day notice that informs the renter about the Rent Relief Program. That program provides options to help renters remain in their homes by providing temporary emergency rental assistance to ensure stable housing during the pandemic. It was funded by federal stimulus grants through the U.S. Department of Treasury.
Tomorrow, the Virginia Cooperative Extension will host a virtual event to help those who are looking to become renters. Taking place from 1pm – 2:30pm, it will provide understanding the pros and cons of renting, goal setting, applying, your responsibilities and rights as a renter, remaining in your home and avoiding eviction. Lastly, getting your deposit back when you’re ready to move. The event is free and you can sign up by clicking on the link.
