Vice Mayor Nickerson to Lead a Demonstration of Action in Dumfries This Friday

As the nation continues to heal from a tragedy and protests call out for justice, leaders throughout the county are stepping up to create solutions with the focus on systemic change. Yesterday several officials met on a virtual forum hosted by the PW Perspective to discuss what actions can be taken within the Prince William County community. The second part of that forum continues tonight, and later this week is a gathering of the people who are looking to create an impact.

On Friday June 5, 2020 at 5:00 PM there will be a demonstration held at Garrison Park, 17749 Main St. in Dumfries. The event, ‘Dumfries Demonstration of Solidarity & Commitment to ACTION,’ is designed to bring about solidarity in the community. Led by Dumfries Vice Mayor Monae Nickerson, the event’s purpose is meant to educate, inform and empower everyone to contribute to the solution, in light of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25th at the hands of a police officer. In speaking with Vice Mayor Nickerson, the takeaway will be to create ‘steps and actions’ that can bring about change.

For those attending, please keep in mind that there will be social distancing rules of 6 feet apart are still mandatory along with wearing masks, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. This will not be a protest, nor will there be a march, as the event will take place entirely in the park. Guest speakers will be on hand as well to address the problems of racial inequities, police brutality, and prejudice that impacts everyone.

If you have any questions, please contact Vice Mayor Nickerson at 703-594-7196, and as she says, “Don’t Just Complain, Contribute!”
