Town of Dumfries honors its youth during state address

by John Reid

During last week’s State of the Town Address, the Dumfries Town Council recognized both its past, present, and future.

Under the theme “Civic and Youth Engagement,” the focus was on showcasing the contributions of its young leaders for their participation in local government and social programs. Programs such as the Heiser Boys and Girls Club, Future Kings, Jack and Jill, Divine Inspirations Dance Group, Young Marines, and the Town of Dumfries interns.

The council also honored the town’s first mayor, Edward W. Fraley, as well as the legacy of John Wilmer Porter. In 1962, he was the first African American elected in the town post-Reconstruction, and served until 1980. The Townhall is named after Porter.

Regarding future developments, they announced updates on the nearly $1 billion received for projects such as the Route 1 realignment and Rose Gaming Resort. The Rose will host a job fair this Wednesday, June 12 from 10am – 4pm at 17757 Main Street in Dumfries. For more details visit www.therosegamingresort.com.
