The Spotlight: Stories That Inspire
The Spotlight is a vlog where uplifting and inspiring stories are shared. I sat down with the owner of the vlog to discuss the show and why we need this now more than ever!
Why did you start this video podcast?
2020 was a tough year for many, including myself. At one point, I was feeling really hopeless and disconnected. So the quick answer is, I started this for myself. To help me be able to speak with those that seemed to be outwardly navigating a tough time successfully. As a Black woman, not only was I facing COVID and its effects across the nation but also police brutality that sparked major protest. All of that took a big toll on me mentally. I was really anxious about what the future would be like. What helped me cope was the way people pulled together to lean on each other. Some of my friends and associates would meet in parks and parking lots to stay connected.
As I spoke with folks, the innovativeness I saw in those around me really inspired me, whether it was starting a business, teaching those in their community about finances, starting new careers or just striving to reach their own personal goals. Hearing how they got started down those paths helped me to put some things into perspective. I realized that we all have a story to tell and we are more inspirational than we think we are.
What is your mission of the podcast?
It’s simple to spread inspiration through relatable stories!
Why is it important for these stories to be shared?
We all have a story to tell. I feel others see where people are and think it’s not achievable, but if they hear about the actual journey someone took, along with their difficulties, it can serve for inspiration. Also, in just about every discussion I have had, the consistent theme that I noticed was people spoke about their dreams and goals and it led to them getting help along the way. These stories connect us. It’s my way of honoring the legacy of those that take part.
What are your future goals?
I am currently working with my church, Faith Moravian Church of the Nation’s Capitol, to help tell our story. We are the only Moravian church in DC and it so happens it is a congregation that was started by black people. I think our story is very special but not only that; it is a part of Black history. I am truly excited about this project.
Also, I have done no live in person discussions but I want to move towards that as well. As a one person team, it’s difficult sometimes for me to imagine how I will achieve that but the idea is there!
I dream of sitting down with someone like D-Nice. He actually had a tremendous influence on me starting The Spotlight. Him starting Club Quarantine during the pandemic really stood out to me. He would be on Instagram for hours, doing what he loved just for the simple reason of spreading joy and encouragement. He was definitely a bright spot for me throughout 2020 and he continues to be one.
What message would you leave to those in the community?
My message is this, “trust the process!” It can be really difficult to be in the moment, especially when there’s a particular destination in mind. I hope that listening to the stories of others will help folks see the journey is just as important as the destination.
