Teens to discuss ‘Caste: The Origins of our Discontents’ this Saturday in Manassas

by John Reid

On Saturday afternoon at Manassas Museum, Conversations in the Community will host a discussion on the book ‘Caste: The Origin of our Discontents.’

According to a summary via Intensive Life Publishing, the book explains how interconnected the caste system in countries such as India and Nazi Germany is to racial inequality in America. It breaks down the eight pillars of the caste system, exploring each of them for better understanding. Using real-life examples, the book examines the similarities, differences, and how they both divide the society to the unfair advantage of certain groups over others.

The community feedback panel will take place at 2:30 p.m. Following the group discussion, the teens will work in groups to create community action projects to address an issue that they observe in our community. They will present their project to the panel for feedback and if there are panelists that can help the teens bring their project to life, they will connect.

Afterwards, there will be a viewing of Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” at the museum. Following the film, there will be a discussion about how people can view themselves through Isabel’s journey. Attendance is free, and for parents who would like to register their teen, please send an email to conversationsinthecommunity@gmail.com.
