Stonewall Jackson Middle School has been re-named Unity Braxton Middle School

This evening the Prince William County School Board announced that the name of the middle school Stonewall Jackson Middle School has been re-named Unity Braxton Middle School. The decision was made during a June 29th meeting of the PWCSB to honor Celestine and Carroll Braxton, respectively.

After weeks of debate over the controversial name, there were several petitions to remove it in favor of celebrating the lives of the civil rights trailblazers. The school board allowed one week for different names to be collected, with names such as former alumni Ibram X. Kendi, the late Arthur Reed, and Lucinda Griffin. This began after a nationwide call to remove Confederate symbols in the wake of the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May. In addition, the auditorium was named after Principal John Miller. The vote was unanimous among the board.

The PW Perspective will provide more updates as they are received.
