Senator McClellan releases statement on passing of Rep. Donald McEachin

Today, both Virginia and the world lost an incredible leader as Representative Donald McEachin transitioned at the age of 61 after a long battle with cancer. He had recently won re-election in Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District, and served for years being a champion for gun law reforms, environmental protections and affordable health care.

Senator Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) released the following statement on the passing of Representative McEachin.

“I am devastated by the passing of my friend of over 20 years, Congressman Donald McEachin. Donald was a fierce social justice warrior and protector of the environment who fought for his constituents and the Commonwealth in every office he served. It was an honor to be elected to the House of Delegates together in 2005 and to succeed him in serving Senate District 9. He was extraordinarily proud to serve the 4th Congressional District, once held by Congressman John Mercer Langston, and reminded me constantly of the legacy of Senate District 9 that I was entrusted to uphold. Donald was a wonderful public servant, mentor, and friend.

“I will miss him, but I know God welcomed him to his final rest with ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.’ My prayers are with Colette and the McEachin family.”

McEachin and McClellan served together in the legislature representing the Richmond area from 2006 to 2017. After McEachin’s election to Congress in 2016, McClellan succeeded him in serving the 9th Senate District. He is survived by his wife Colette and three adult children. His seat will remain vacant until there is a special election.
