Prince William Public Libraries is gearing up for its inaugural Lit Con, a five-week celebration of fandom, comics, manga, and more. In the latest episode of the “Important Library Stuff” podcast, host Emily Bickers is joined by Sharon Moores from Dumfries Library and Kat Seastead from Haymarket Gainesville Library to discuss the exciting events planned from April 1 – May 4, 2024.
Lit Con aims to promote and celebrate comics, manga, and anime collections. With nearly 50 events spread across all 12 branches, there’s something for everyone, from avid comic readers to casual fans. Lit Con kicks off on April 1 with a special event at Central Library on Saturday, April 6, from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. featuring light saber battles, adventures with the 501st Legion of Storm Troopers, and an Artist Alley.
One of the standout features of Lit Con is its inclusivity and accessibility. Unlike traditional conventions that can be overwhelming, Lit Con offers a more relaxed and time-friendly experience with passive programs and events catering to different interests and age groups.
For those interested in creating their own comics, there are DIY comic programs, character creation workshops, and even portfolio reviews by industry professionals. The Fantasy Artists Roundtable will be offered virtually on Saturday, April 27, providing an opportunity for aspiring artists to learn from seasoned professionals from the comfort of home.
Even if you’re just stepping into the world of fandom, Lit Con has something for you. From Japanese bookbinding workshops to Pokémon clubs and cosplay events, explore various aspects of fandom and creativity in a welcoming environment.
Lit Con’s emphasis on community engagement and creativity reflects Prince William Public Libraries’ mission where everyone, regardless of their interests, is encouraged to participate and express themselves.
