Prince William Police Requests Board of County Supervisors for Allocation of Funds
During these uncertain times there are several issues that the Prince William County communities still face. Unemployment continues to rise, the COVID-19 pandemic cases are fluctuating, and then there is the continuous battle over whether or not the schools should re-open or remain virtual. In the midst of it all, the Board of County Supervisors have made decisions to keep the local economy afloat, including passing a $1 million dollar resolution for COVID-19 relief in accordance with the CARES Act last week. As many of the resolutions have been widely celebrated, one potential agenda item for this week creates potential division.
According to the released agenda for this week’s meeting, the Prince William County Police Department is requesting approximately $750,000 from the Board of County Supervisors for the following: Budget and Appropriate $750,000 from the Criminal Forfeiture Fund Balance to the Criminal Forfeiture Expenditure Budget to Purchase Items and Services Including Facility Improvements, Security Improvements and Equipment, and Officer Safety Equipment. However, there are several local citizens who believe that the funds would be better allocated into community programs, such as mental health services and substance abuse programs. These are only two of the programs that have been in greater demand since the pandemic became widespread.
The Board of County Supervisors meeting takes place on Tuesday October 6 at 2:00 pm and people who would like to speak on the issue can visit https://pwcgov.granicusideas.com/.
