Prince William County Young Democrats issue a statement on collective bargaining

Release is in response to statement by PWC School Board

On April 27, the Prince William County School Board released a statement regarding efforts to approve collective bargaining. Among the items discussed was the verification of signatures by the Prince William Education Association. The statement can be read here.

Earlier today, the PWC Young Democrats issued a response. The statement reads as follows:

“The Prince William Young Democrats proudly support meaningful collective bargaining for Prince William County educators, education support professionals, and other Prince William County Schools employees.

For more than 50 years, our faithful public sector employees–including educators and their colleagues–have been banned from organizing for better wages, working conditions, benefits, and more. It has long been proven that banning unions depresses wages and increases the disparities between various groups of workers, especially women and women of color.

Now that the General Assembly has made it legal for local governments to establish policies to support education professionals, it is time to give them a true seat at the table. Many of these professionals bore the full brunt of the pandemic and have felt that they have been left without a voice when it comes to true recovery; collective bargaining would give them that voice.

Workers rights are human rights, and we urge the School Board to adopt a robust Collective Bargaining policy for PWCS.”
