Prince William County to celebrate Universal Human Rights Day in January

The Prince William County Human Rights Commission will celebrate Universal Human Rights Day on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, virtually at 10 a.m. The theme of the program is “Our hope for a more just, safe, and peaceful world can only be achieved when there is universal respect for the inherent dignity and equal rights of all members of the human family.”

This year’s Human Rights Day theme relates to ‘Equality’ and Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” The principles of equality and non-discrimination are at the heart of human rights. This includes addressing and finding solutions for deep-rooted forms of discrimination that have affected the most vulnerable people in societies, including women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTI people, migrants, and people with disabilities, among others.

The day will include the annual presentation of the Human Rights Awards given to members of the community who provide unique contributions to human and civil rights. The 2021 winners are: Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Taqub Muhammad Zargarpur, Tummy Yum Yum Gourmet Candy, Prince William County Police Department, Omicron Zeta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Frank Washington, and the Coalition to Save Historic Thoroughfare, and Carried to Full Term.

The community is invited to share in this important celebration. Prior to the ceremony, a link will be provided to participate in the virtual program. If you plan to attend, RSVP to the Human Rights office at 703-792-4680 or email pwhrc@pwcgov.org.
