Makya Little wins Straw Poll for Virginia’s 19th House District

Lorton, VA – Makya Little, a former FBI employee and CIA Officer who announced her candidacy for Virginia’s House of Delegates last month to represent a newly drawn district, won the Mount Vernon District Democratic Committee’s annual straw poll for HD-19.

This was the 14th Annual Mardi Gras Celebration and Straw Poll, hosted and co-chaired by Genie McCreery and Matt Bell and the Mount Vernon Democrats. Senator Scott Surovell initiated the celebration and straw poll in 2008, with the intention of making it the first event after the
announcements of primary candidates in Fairfax County and, specifically, Mount Vernon. It is a Northern Virginia tradition that is attended by many Democrats—including Congressional, U.S. Senate, state and local officials.

Little, a first-time candidate for public office, addressed the audience—which included members and staffers of all three congressional districts which comprise HD-19—by introducing herself as a 25-year Woodbridge, Virginia, resident, a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a mother of three Prince William County Public Schools students, and a domestic violence survivor. “I am running to help unify our community so that we can solve problems that impact our shared prosperity together,” Little said before asking for the audience’s help.

“In the coming months, I’ll be hosting a series of listening sessions, and I want to hear your voice, your concerns, and your ideas so that we can co-create a government that works for all.”

Little’s campaign is in the process of organizing multiple listening sessions throughout the new district to discuss topics such as transportation, environment and waterways, criminal justice reform, affordable housing, education equity and school facility infrastructure, and more.

Little encouraged attendees and constituents to sign-up to receive more information about the series at www.MakyaLittle.com. The PW Perspective has endorsed Little in her campaign.
