Glenn Youngkin Secures Republican Nomination for Governor

The Republican Party of Virginia announced on Monday that businessman Glenn Youngkin, a first-time candidate, secured the Republican nomination for governor in the 2021 election.

Youngkin faced off against six other candidates over the weekend: State Senator Amanda Chase; Delegate Kirk Cox; Sergio de la Peña; Peter Doran; Octavia Johnson; and Pete Snyder.

Throughout the nominating process, Youngkin has framed himself as a conservative political outsider. His website does not list any issues or a platform; however, he stood in contrast to his opponents, most of whom have served in public office before.

Youngkin took to Twitter after the announcement to express his readiness to serve.

Prior to his political career, Youngkin was a CEO at the private-equity firm Carlyle Group.

Youngkin will face off against the Democratic nominee in November, and he will be joined on the Republican ticket by Jason Miyares, the party’s nominee for attorney general. The party has yet to count the votes for the lt. governor nomination, but the results are expected soon.

The Democratic nominee will be decided in a primary election on June 8th.
