Willie Toney has lived a life of service. Whether it was on a federal or local level, he has always focused on dedicating his life to making people’s lives better. It was only fitting that on a beautiful September Saturday afternoon that he received a richly-deserved honor by having the new basketball court at Ginn Memorial Park dedicated in his name. Hosted by Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood, the proposal that was presented by Councilwoman Selonia Miles, and seconded by Councilwoman Cyndy Neville came to reality as family and friends came out to celebrate the life of Mr. Toney.

Mr. Toney addressed the crowd, having his wife beside him, thanking everyone for their attendance and support. He highlighted how the park used to be a donkey farm but by a collective effort, it became a place where the youth of Dumfries could congregate and enjoy themselves in a safe environment. “The power is not in the position, but it’s in the collecting,” the longtime Councilman said. “Being in position to do something means nothing without working with others to get things done.” He concluded with a generational message of making sure that those he has mentored throughout the years continue to make an impact. “If you don’t make a change where you are, you’re disappointing everyone who stood before you.”

We spoke with Mr. Toney prior to the ceremony on what the occasion meant to him. “To be quite honest with you, this is somewhat overwhelming to me. I’m just beholden to these people for thinking enough of me to do this. We worked hard to put this park out here but it wasn’t any intention of being noticed. It was something that the community needed. I’m just glad to be a part of it and feel blessed. The fact that they wanted to put my name on (the court) that’s really amazing.”

Dumfries Vice Mayor Monae Nickerson, one of the many leaders that Mr. Toney mentored over the years, offered the following statement to the PW Perspective. “Today we honored Mr. Willie Toney and allowed him the opportunity, that so many aren’t afforded, to smell the roses and enjoy being honored and celebrated. Mr. Toney has and continues to cultivate seeds of leadership, empowerment, and engagement in our community – nourishing future leaders. For that I am grateful and I will continue the practice in his honor.”
