Dumfries Honors Community Excellence at the 2024 Mayor’s Ball & Community Awards Gala

by John Reid

Saturday night, the town of Dumfries Mayor celebrated its most outstanding leaders and organizations at the highly anticipated 2024 Mayor’s Ball & Community Awards Gala. Hosted by Mayor Derrick Wood, the event brought together local leaders, businesses, and community members to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the town’s growth, service, and spirit.

Each award recipient was honored not only with their respective recognition but also with a congressional letter from Representative Abigail Spanberger, acknowledging their achievements and their positive impact on the community. Additionally, two of the evening’s most distinguished honorees, Christopher Brown, recipient of the Living Legend Award, and Tisha Lewis, Fox 5 News anchor and recipient of the Hometown Hero Award, received a Congressional Record entered by Rep. Spanberger, further immortalizing their contributions on a national stage.

Award Highlights:

Business of the Year: Welburn Management was recognized for its exceptional service to the community through the successful operation of the Route 234 McDonald’s, one of Dumfries’ busiest and most welcoming destinations.
Youth Organization of the Year: Dale City Lightning Track Club was celebrated for its incredible commitment to youth development and athletics. Recently named 2024 AAU Club of the Year, the club has also produced 10 National Junior Olympics medalists, solidifying its position as a leader in youth sports mentorship.
Officer of the Year: Kasie Banks was honored for her dedication to serving and protecting Dumfries, showcasing her exemplary work as a law enforcement officer.
Religious Organization of the Year: Dumfries United Methodist Church was recognized for its impactful outreach programs, such as the Bread and Fishes food giveaway and Emily’s Clothes Closet, offering support to those in need within the community.
Living Legend Award: The prestigious Living Legend Award was presented to Christopher Brown, a lifelong resident of Dumfries and former Mayor, who has dedicated his life to public service and local business. His commitment to Dumfries has been a cornerstone of the town’s progress, and receiving a Congressional Record solidifies his status as a true community icon.
Hometown Hero Award: Tisha Lewis, a renowned Fox 5 News anchor and Dumfries native, was recognized as this year’s Hometown Hero for her outstanding contributions to journalism and her ongoing advocacy for positive change. Tisha was also honored with a Congressional Record, celebrating her achievements on both a local and national level.

Al Brooks Unsung Hero Award: Sandra ‘Queenie’ McLean, for her outstanding service in the community, including launching The Period Project, which on December 7th is planning to give more than 500 women and young girls feminine hygiene products at Babylon on Golansky Blvd.

The night was made even more special by the attendance of Virginia Ali, 91-year-old co-founder of the iconic Ben’s Chili Bowl. Mrs. Ali drove to Dumfries for the event, choosing to celebrate with the community instead of attending Howard University’s 100th Homecoming Anniversary. Her presence was a testament to the significance of the night and the impact Dumfries has on those beyond its borders.

Mayor Derrick Wood reflected on the evening, saying, “It’s truly an honor to stand alongside these incredible individuals and organizations. Tonight, we not only celebrate their achievements, but we also celebrate the spirit of service and unity that defines Dumfries. I’m grateful for the continued support from our community and deeply humbled by their unwavering dedication. Each of these awardees embodies the very best of Dumfries, and it’s a privilege to be part of a community that values such dedication.”

In addition to the awards ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner, and entertainment throughout the night. The Mayor’s Ball continues to be a premier event for Dumfries, celebrating those who go above and beyond to make the town a better place for everyone. Proceeds from the event benefit the Derrick Wood Foundation, supporting local programs and scholarships for youth in the community.
