Letter to Elected Officials on behalf of Moms Demand Action

A month ago, the Moms Demand Action of Prince William County re-established their chapter as a response to the tragic gun violence that has plagued the area. The chapter lead, Shantell Rock, wrote the following letter to elected officials today:

Dear Distinguished Elected Officials,

No words can adequately describe the immeasurable toll gun violence exacts on families and our community.  Prince William County is currently experiencing an increase in gun violence, and it is a situation that cannot be dealt with by elected officials alone.  In May, there were at least four people killed by guns and seven shot and wounded, including a 9-year-old child who was playing outside of her home in addition to multiple incidents of shootings at homes and reckless handling of firearms. Additionally, two arrests were made of juveniles who were in possession of guns at the mall and while at school.  Further, in the last week of July, there were five shootings and 1 stabbing in one weekend alone.

The surge in incidents and deaths demands that we respond immediately to prevent future violence. Without intervention, the county will experience increased gang violence, domestic violence, deaths, and unspeakable mental and emotional trauma. The sounds of gunfire; the reality that kids or loved ones have become unintended victims; and the inability to feel safe can cause long-term harm to anyone. It is the risk of and existence of that harm that calls us to action.

We, as community leaders and elected officials, have failed to generate sufficient public outrage to bring about changes that will prevent senseless acts of violence. To be clear, there is plenty of blame to go around for the growing violence in our community. Authentic leadership does not blame; it acts. As community leaders and elected officials, it is our responsibility to work in partnership with the community to galvanize every possible resource to prevent, intervene, investigate, and suppress gun violence.

Therefore, after meeting with community groups, non-profits, faith leaders, activists, elected officials, and Governor Youngkin’s team, the Moms Demand Action, Prince William County Chapter has been reactivated. This organization is led by the community seeking to improve gun safety laws, galvanize community intervention, and outreach, and be front-line supporters for gun violence survivors.

The first meeting will be held on September 1, 2022, from 7 pm to 8 pm at The Palace. More information will be divulged at this meeting on the structure of the chapter.  I hope you can attend and/or please send a representative.

I am truly looking forward to working alongside you as the Chapter Lead in hopes we could bring the community peace and comfort.

Bests,

Shantell E. Rock, MPS
