Idris O’Connor Explores Possible Candidacy for District 31

On June 23, 2020, Idris O’Connor announced his exploratory committee for Virginia House of Delegate in District 31. He is currently the Chair of the Cooperative Council of Ministries and the youngest member of the Prince William County Social Services Board.

O’Connor is proud to be a voice for the Black and Brown communities. O’Connor stated, “The status quo isn’t working for most Virginians, especially here in the 31st District. It’s time for change in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and I hope to build on the hard work that Delegate Guzman has started to bring real change to this district.”

He pledges to advocate for those facing homelessness and other under served communities. During the past four years, O’Connor has worked to place Democrats on all levels of the Commonwealth, including a Democrat majority in the General Assembly.

Anika Rahman, a member of the Prince William Young Democrats vouches for O’Connor’s dedication to the community and political activism. Rahman says, “I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Idris through our mutual passion for advocacy to improve local conditions and civic engagement. Idris has always stayed active on local issues to help the community. I’ve spent many years with him canvassing for candidates. He’s bright, attentive and understand the needs and concerns of the community.”

O’Connor released his key issues statements:

Education: I stand for student-first education. For too long, we have put more focus on the costs of education and the statistics behind it. We’ve forgotten what education is supposed to be about: the students. We need to return students to the center of the conversation on education, and that doesn’t just mean making policy that works for them, but also listening to them in order to make that policy. If elected, I will fight for students.

Affordable Housing: For far too long affordable housing has been out of reach for many residents in the 31st district. I have been a long-time advocate for affordable housing and against homelessness. If elected, I will work to make sure Virginia has affordable housing for everyone.

Criminal Justice Reform: For too long, our country and our Commonwealth has had a criminal justice system that disproportionately incarcerates people of color. It’s time for that to change. If elected, I will fight for criminal justice reform to create a system that works for everyone.
