Governor Youngkin issues proclamation declaring April 30 as “Ryan Zimmerman Day.”

“Mr. National” is finally getting a day to celebrate his amazing career.

Yesterday, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin wrote an official proclamation that April 30 will be known in the Commonwealth as Ryan Zimmerman Day. The former Washington Nationals star retired last year after a 16-year career in Major League Baseball, playing every year with the 2019 World Series Champions.

“The Commonwealth’s own Ryan Zimmerman is a baseball legend and trailblazer. I am thrilled to issue a proclamation designating Ryan Zimmerman Day in Virginia to commemorate his service to his community, UVA, Virginia and his skill and dedication to baseball. Congratulations Mr. National!” said Youngkin in a press release.

Zimmerman, who played his high school career at Floyd E. Kellum HS in Virginia Beach, went on to be an All-ACC first team star at the University of Virginia, was the Nationals first ever draft pick after moving to Montreal in 2005. He won a Gold Glove, was a two-time All Star, and hit the first home run in Nationals history. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in home runs, RBI’s, hits, and games played.

He was inducted into the University of Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018. The full proclamation can be read here.
