My First BlerdCon Experience

by Trey Thompson

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting a convention that is unlike any other. BlerdCon! I had never been but after I visited, I realized why so many people from all over the country come to this event. It celebrates Black creators, cosplayers, and nerds! It’s an event that allows people to be free and dress up as their favorite fantasy, anime, or cartoon characters. I’ve met so many people who decided to take advantage and show off their creative side with so many costumes and outfits!

From Princess Belle to Naruto Uzumaki to even Ronald McDonald…there is no way you can come to this event without feeling sad or out of place. So many people were kind and took time to stop and explain why they chose their costumes and why they chose the characters they chose. The convention also made sure not to leave the foodies out! With a slew of different food trucks to choose from right next to the venue. What made it ten times better, was the fact that all the trucks were Black owned! I love supporting Black owned businesses which made this event even more special.

BlerdCon brings a whole new meaning to what it means to be whatever and whoever you want to be no matter your race, gender, or background. It’s an event that caters to Black Nerds, which is where the term “Blerd” hails from. It gives people a safe place to just dress up and come together and celebrate their common interest. They even had different panels that you could go and listen to great advice from professionals. Blerdcon takes place every July on the second weekend in beautiful Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. I highly recommend that you, your friends and family can come out and experience this event at least once! It is well worth the Money and absolutely worth the time! It’s hard to put everything in one paper. But one thing that’s for sure is you won’t be disappointed!
