Endorsement: Idris O’Connor for Delegate (D-31)

The PW Perspective, Virginia’s Anti-Racist Voice, proudly endorses Idris O’Connor in his bid for the House of Delegates in the 31st District.

O’Connor will face incumbent Delegate Elizabeth Guzman as well as challengers Kara Pitek and Rod Hall in the June 8th primary.

O’Connor has a unique background that is enhanced by his experience and dedication to his community which has informed our endorsement of him.

A longtime advocate for affordable housing and against homelessness, O’Connor has served as the Chairperson of the Cooperative Council of Ministries (CCOM) for over three years. Prior to serving as Chairman, O’Connor served as vice chair for three years. The CCOM is a religious group made up of several churches and based in Prince William County; the group advocates for different ways to combat homelessness, and they run a volunteer operation to help those suffering from homelessness in the community.

O’Connor also serves as a member of the Prince William County Social Services Board, where he represents the Neabsco District. As a member of the board, he advises Neabsco District Supervisor Victor Angry on issues relating to social services. In this capacity, he also serves as an advocate for the needs of the Prince William County Department of Social Services and those that the department serves.

O’Connor has also been a vocal environmental activist as a co-founder of the Greater Prince William Climate Action Network. He has fought for environmental justice and for additional measures to combat climate change in his community and across the Commonwealth.

Running on a platform of justice reform, educational equity, environmental justice, civil rights, and expanding healthcare, O’Connor is arguably the most progressive candidate for the district.

As the son of an immigrant and a healthcare professional, O’Connor knows the issues that are facing the Commonwealth right now because he has experienced them himself. As a young Black man and a graduate of Prince William County Schools, he knows the issues within Virginia’s public schools firsthand, and he will address them.

There is no need to ask where O’Connor’s values lie because they are on display with his record. He fights for his community as an activist and an advocate, and he is prepared to fight for his community as their next Delegate.

Idris O’Connor’s background, experience, and platform make him the clear anti-racist choice for the district, and as Virginia’s premier anti-racist newspaper, it is our publication’s honor and duty to endorse him.
