Dumfries Town Councilwoman Cydny Neville Advocates to Change the Name of Confederate Court

Councilwoman Cydny Neville released a statement on Tuesday regarding the change in name of Confederate Ct. in the Town of Dumfries and the public hearing that will take place in September.

“America is in the midst of experiencing a reckoning, and our quaint Town is not immune to this. We are also not immune to the path towards healing that comes along with this reckoning.  The Town Manager and I have been researching and analyzing the necessary path to take when addressing the need to rename Confederate Ct. for quite some time. During the June Council meeting, I effectively advocated for a resolution to combat structural racism in Town; with support of the Council, it passed. Now is the time to take further steps towards dismantling the intricate web of structural racism—by addressing its traumatic images. It’s time to help everyone heal by removing such symbols that serve as offensive reminders of hurt and pain; and to amplify messages of hope of a brighter day filled with peace and unity!” Neville wrote.

“I encourage the Town, friends of the Town, and the general public who have had to bear witness to this symbol of hate while travelling on Main Street, to join the effort to replace the former (currently misplaced sign) with a more fitting name. Let’s change confederate Court to Liberty Lane!” added Neville.

The name change will be the subject of a virtual public hearing on September 15, 2020.  Neville encourages town residents to speak at the public hearing and/or send an email to PIO@dumfriesva.gov in order to make their voices heard
