Dumfries Police Chief Announces Retirement

Dumfries Police Chief James McCarty announced on Monday that he plans to retire from the town’s police department at the end of August.

A tenured law enforcement professional, McCarty brought over 25 years of public safety experience to the Town of Dumfries. Serving as Chief since 2018, during his tenure, he worked to improve functional relations with Prince William County Police and oversaw the buildout of the new police station in the former Town Hall building. 

McCarty’s last day on the job will be August 31, 2020.

“Chief McCarty has dedicated his life to service and for that he is to be commended. We wish him all the best in his retirement,” shared Mayor Derrick Wood.

Sergeant Vernon Galyen will serve as Interim Police Chief following McCarty’s while the town conducts a national search for a permanent replacement.
