Black Men Talking about Mental Health and Accountability
On Sunday Keep the Box LLC hosted a virtual forum for Black men to discuss mental challenges that are often faced but rarely expressed. Moderated by Get Off the Bench magazine creator Mark Wiggins, the forum featured both counselors and psychiatrists who addressed how these issues need to be not only defined but addressed in a safe and encouraging environment. Joining Wiggins was Dr. Oliver T. Reid, J.J. McQueen, Nelson Richardson and Deon Brown.
The topics ranged from dissecting the differences between mental health and illness to how do Black men keep one another accountable. In addition, the panelists shared their own personal stories of challenges that they face and the importance of being open with one another. One story of note was when Richardson described how he talked with a young man who was about to steal an item out of a store.
After the event there was a Q & A session in which more questions were addressed by the panel, including the psychological effects of racism on young Black men.
