Betty Covington to Receive Dumfries Mayor’s “Living Legend” Award

Dumfries leader the Honorable Betty Covington will be among the honorees at the 2022 Mayor’s Choice Community Awards, part of Mayor Derrick Wood’s 3rd Annual Community Awards and Community Scholarship Ball on Saturday, October 8, 2022.

Betty D. Covington served Prince William County Public Schools for more than 50 years, as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and School Board member. Mrs. Covington retired in 1995, after 19 years as Principal of Kilby Elementary School. In the following year, she was elected to the School Board as the Dumfries (now Potomac) Magisterial District member. But running a school was in her blood; in 1997, she returned to PWCS as principal of Dumfries Elementary School, remaining until her second retirement in 2003. She was then re-elected to the School Board for three consecutive four-year terms. Ms. Covington also was elected to the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Board of Directors. She represented the VSBA on the Virginia Department of Education Gifted Education Committee and served several years on the Board of Directors and Awards Committee at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education.

“As Mayor, it is important that our History is celebrated and I will continue to promote the very best of our community to everyone,” said Mayor Derrick Wood. “Mrs. Covington has been an amazing mentor to me in the Town of Dumfries and it gives me great pleaser to have the opportunity to honor her at  the 2022 Mayor’s Ball and Celebrate her life of service to our Town.”

Other 2022 Mayor’s Choice Awards to be handed out that night include Al Brooks Unsung Hero Award to VA Black Business Directory for commitment to amplifying the exposure of our members while advancing the economic development and social equities of black business owners.;  Non-Profit of the Year to Friends of Dumfries SLAVE Cementrary for giving honor and dignity to those given freedom in death;  Community Business of the Year to Vincent and Vincent;  Volunteerism Award to Rosies Gaming Emporium;  Police Officer of the Year;  Religious Institution of the Year is Little Union Baptist Church;  Town Employee of the Year;  Teacher of the Year from Dumfries Elementary.

The Mayor’s Ball will be an evening of entertainment, exceptional food, and a celebration of all the things that make the Town of Dumfries a phenomenal place to live and do business.  Mayor Derrick Wood’s Ball was created to raise scholarship money for high school graduating seniors and current college students who reside in the Town of Dumfries and to honor the members and businesses in the community.
