DMV has incredibly talented artists and creatives. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the local artist, NonPareil, for an enjoyable and inspirational conversation.
What’s the meaning of your name and how would you describe yourself as an artist/musician?
NonPareil – means no parallel, no comparisons – I believe as an artist, composer, songwriter – I’m here for a purpose. My art is unique and my delivery / style is 1 of 1. But it’s more than just style & delivery. What I’ve seen in life has shaped a unique perspective. I grew up in Irongate in Manassas until junior high then moved to suburban Manassas Park area. After moving most of my friends across the tracks where I hang, most didn’t have two parent incomes like me. Then graduating and going to an HBCU allowed me to experience the diversity within my culture.
How long have you been in the music industry?
I’ve been doing music professionally since 2016 that’s when I started SoundCloud. First single “Still Love Me” My first album “Perception” dropped in 2019.
Your new song, New Devils, is so powerful. Tell us about the inspiration behind it.
I was going through some struggles mentally at the time and began reflecting on experiences that I felt could help some people that’s been through or currently dealing with some of the same struggles
If you could say one thing you want your music to do for listeners, what would it be?
Impact. I’m careful with how I write so that no song is meaningless. Every record has a message that should touch the soul or arouse some type of emotion.
What is your message to others pursuing their dreams?
Simply put, relentless pursuit! If it’s in your heart and mind, give it to the world. Purpose, passion, pursuit are what you’re here for. If they intertwine, we know you have something powerful!
