Anonymous List for Change Campaigns for Amendments to False Police Reporting

Earlier this week the PW Perspective covered the recently racially motivated incidents in Central Park, NY and Minneapolis. As local community leaders come together next week to address issues within the area, Anonymous List For Change is campaigning for Virginia’s leaders to amend the law in which false police reports are classified.

Under the authority of Virginia State Code, Section 18.2-461, it is a crime to make a false police report. False police reports are punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor. The maximum possible penalty is one year in jail and/or $2,500 fine. However, that misdemeanor does not consider racially motivated false police reports, which is akin to a hate crime.

ALFC is advocating that for false police reports that are ruled as racially motivated, the charge becomes an automatic 1 year in jail and designated as a Class 1 misdemeanor, or a Class 6 Felony charge with a minimum 1 year in jail.

The PW Perspective will provide updates on this issue as they are made available.
