Alex Harvell “Nothingiseye” is changing the game and breaking barriers.

I got the chance to interview Alex about his music and his organization.

How would you describe your music?

My music is very multi-dimensional in the sense of I don’t limit myself to specific genres or to a certain label. Various categories include blues, jazz, funk, reggae, rock, hip-hop, and Experimental Ambience. It is vast but ultimately just an appreciation of the curators before me as well as an experiment of the current culture. My music is life and all of its emotions. 

Who or what is your inspiration?

Ever since I could remember, music has always been a big part of my journey. Growing up, my family introduced me to a lot of different genres of music, like the vinyl records & tape cassettes my grandparents would play every day. I felt blessed to be surrounded by it all and inspired me by the joy in which it was bringing to me and my loved ones. They had an entire collection of different music, from Motown Jackson 5 & Marvin Gaye, to Jimi Hendrix and Santana. It was something that I picked up really quick as a kid and my family encouraged me to dance and be myself.  

I think being so young and introduced to the positive vibrations of the sounds + the message of the storyteller (s), really helped embody the meaning of why I create and what I choose to emulate through my creativity. 

That is amazing! What is your current mission?

My mission with my music is to bring joy & honesty onto others bringing them into the moment with me. It is to tell my story while having these characteristics. I aim to spread the enlightenment of life experiences based on my transparency & less outside validation. 

What is your message to the community?

A message I have for my community is, always stand up what you believe in. Now more than ever. Never lose your integrity, but always match that with hard work & consistency. Be kind to yourself, take care of yourself, and know that you will always have abundance in life. It starts within.

What challenges have you had in your career?

I would say a challenge in my career has been managing the emotions on the Journey while building my foundation & legacy. As a young Black man, we have to have space to vent and decompress. Also, finding balance within the pace that works best for me and maintaining my difference while still coexisting in society that is at its own speed and chaos.

What’s an accomplishment you are proud of?

One accomplishment I feel great about is my first musical project called Carytown Classics volume one. We made this project live when I first visited Carytown, Richmond for the first time. I made each track on the beat tape live each day I was there. At the time of that release, I was facing some adversity prior to it and making it through to create and actually have a product that has my energy in it fully, means so much to me. This project is available through email only. 

Another Accomplishment I feel good about is releasing the first major musical project this year, which is called, “Delorean BloodMoon”. This project features five tracks made of a three-year time period. A short script I wrote that goes with the music, and a music video/short film I made in partnership with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg as well. I released the full project on the Blood Moon Eclipse we had on May15th.
