Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood announces re-election campaign

Yesterday, Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood, before a crowd of supporters, announced his intentions to run for re-election in the 2022 campaign.

“Today, I stand more than committed to do the work that the people elected me to do, and that’s continue to make Dumfries a destination place where people not only drive to, but to live, work, and play in.”

Wood has overseen the state’s oldest town grow into just that during his tenure, from the building of Rosie’s casino to obtaining the largest grants in the town’s history. In addition, he has announced plans to bring a food market to the area as well as revitalize the port of Dumfries, which was connected to Quantico Creek and essential to Batestown.

Joining Wood were several members of the community and elected officials who voiced their backing of his candidacy, such as school board members Lillie Jessie, Justin Wilk, Delegates Candi King and Elizabeth Guzman, as well as Circuit Court Clerk Jacqueline Smith. Among them were Congressman Gerry Connolly, who praised Wood’s ability to connect the citizens of Dumfries with its leadership.

“Derrick created the connection between the people who live here and the people who represent Dumfries,” said Connolly.

Once Wood thanked those in attendance, Gwen Washington, one of his mentors, stated that while his mayoral opponent Ebony Lofton, who announced her intentions to run last month, is running on the concept of improving Dumfries, excitedly stated that “We’ve got the best!”

Early voting begins on September 23rd, with the general election on November 8, 2022, In addition to this race, there will be three town council members up for election. More information on Wood’s campaign can be found on his website.
