Immigrant Rights Leaders and DREAMers Across Virginia Call for Immediate Action on Immigration Reform

On Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 1 p.m. EST, immigration reform leaders will hold a virtual press briefing to celebrate the nine-year anniversary of the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program, which was on June 14, and the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court of the United States ruling that President Trump improperly terminated DACA, which will take place on June 18. With the United States Senate currently deliberating on a path forward for immigration reform, speakers will advocate for the passage of the American Dream and Promise Act of 2021, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2021, as well as other steps that can be taken now to fix our current immigration system.

Speakers include Tram Nguyen, co-executive director, New Virginia Majority, The Honorable Alfonso Lopez, Virginia House of Delegates, Monica Sarmiento, executive director, VA Coalition for Immigrant Rights, and Praveen Meyyan, National Co-Chair, Political Advocacy & Engagement, South Asians for America.

Additionally, Darwin Murillo and Dinanda Pramesti, immigrant rights leaders/DACA recipients, will speak about their journeys. Murillo was separated from his mother for almost ten years.  In 2012, when DACA was announced, he enrolled in community college, and now works full-time as a legal assistant and attends George Mason University part-time. Pramesti is originally from Jakarta, Indonesia and came to the U.S. with a visa when she was six years old with her parents. She is now a graduate of George Mason University and is currently a communications consultant for a progressive political consulting firm.
