Civil Rights Activist Shirley Ginwright, Endorses Del. Sam Rasoul for Lt. Governor

On Monday, Del. Sam Rasoul (D-11) announced that former Fairfax County NAACP President Shirley Ginwright has endorsed his campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Ginwright served two terms as President of the Fairfax County NAACP, and is a veteran of the civil rights movement, once marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Sam speaks for the people, all of the people, not just a few,” said Ginwright, who will be joining Rasoul for a meet and greet this evening. “He has shown this during his four terms as a Delegate when he has supported and introduced legislation. We need a Lieutenant Governor who has a proven record. We need Sam Rasoul.”

“As we look at the progress Virginia is now making on expanding voting access, on addressing racial inequities in health care and education, and in moving forward on criminal justice reform, we owe a debt of gratitude to leaders like Shirley Ginwright,” said Rasoul. “They stood for what was right, even when it wasn’t as popular. We are in the position to make real progress because of their work.”

As early voting began, Rasoul released a bold plan to expand voting rights and access to the ballot in Virginia. Following the release of police video showing a violent incident against Lt. Nazario in Windsor, Rasoul was invited to speak at a press conference organized by Roanoke NAACP President Brenda Hale, who has also endorsed his campaign. Rasoul has introduced legislation to require video and audio recordings of violent police incidents be made public within fifteen days.

To date, Rasoul has received the endorsement of over 100 elected officials and grasstops leaders, including former U.S. Congressman Rick Boucher, former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, seven members of the General Assembly, fifteen mayors and city and town council members, and seven school board members. His campaign has also been endorsed by:
