As A Woman…Communication in the Black Family

Communication in relationships is a common challenge for many. But, when one or both partners are dealing with mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety, this challenge can become exacerbated!

In the Black community, it can be a test for men to overcome the learned behavior of not expressing his genuine emotions. When a Black man expresses his truest self to his partner, it is imperative that she handle the situation sensitively.

Mark Wiggins, National Speaker and CEO of Get Off The Bench, Digital Magazine, stated, “when a man expresses to his partner that he is down, or frustrated, the best thing she can do is ask, ‘How may I help you?’, this will show her partner that she is interested in doing what he needs to feel supported, not simply what she thinks is right.”

On Sunday, February 28th at 4pm, the event, “My Brother’s Keeper: Mental Health and Accountability” Mark Wiggins along with Dr. Oliver T Reid, JJ McQueen, Nelson Richardson and Deon Brown, LPC; will address these issues and provide information and resources on how we can work together and heal some pain that exists in the Black family.
