Briana Sewell Announces Bid for Delegate in 51st District
Woodbridge resident Briana Sewell announced on Wednesday that she is running for Virginia House for Delegates in the 51st District in 2021.
Delegate Hala Ayala, who represents the 51st District, is running for Lt. Governor and has endorsed Sewell to replace her in the House of Delegates.
“We’ve recently entered into a new era in Prince William County and our Commonwealth as a whole,” Sewell said in a statement. “I’m in this race because I want to continue to bild on the important work in Richmond and be a voice for the 51st District. That means strengthening our public schools, improving resources for service members, fighting for affordable healthcare, investing in transportation, and working to ensure economic prosperity for all.”
Sewell comes from a military family and says that her parents instilled in her the importance of service and integrity. Having worked as a public servant on the local and federal level, she has experience working with constituents and responding to their concerns.
Sewell currently serves as Chief of Staff to the Chair of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, Ann Wheeler. Prior to working for Wheeler, she served as the Political Director and Senior Organizer for the Virginia Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy.
Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-Virginia) endorsed Sewell, citing her work in his Prince William County office, and saying, “[…]she fought every day for the people of Prince William County. I know she’ll bring that same energy, tenacity, and enthusiasm to the House of Delegates. I’m proud to support Briana for Delegate and urge everyone in the 51st District to do the same.”
In addition to Ayala’s and Connolly’s endorsements, Sewell has also been endorsed by multiple other elected officials and community leaders:
- State Senator George Barker
- State Senator Jeremy McPike
- State Senator Scott Surovell
- House Appropriations Chair Luke Torian
- Fmr. Delegate Dave Brickley
