Climate change initiatives are coming to Prince William County.

Last week the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments introduced a new greenhouse gas emissions goal for the region. The goal is to have the region, including PWC, to have a reduction in GHG emissions by 2030. Yesterday during the Board of County Supervisors meeting, Occoquan Supervisor Kenny Boddye briefed the BOCS on the creation of the Community Energy Master Plan. Created by Mothers Out Front and the Greater Prince William Climate Action Network, the plan, also known as the Climate Action plan, will be included in the Environmental chapter of the overall comprehensive plan.

– 100% of Prince William County’s electricity to be from renewable sources by 2035

– For Prince William County Government operations to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2030

– For Prince William County to be 100% carbon neutral by 2050

– Incorporate equity principles and environmental justice into the Energy plan as well as the entire Environment Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan.

BOCS Chair Ann Wheeler also directed the staff to initiate a Climate Planning Process to address sustainability issues within the county.
