The Biden Campaign announced on Tuesday that Former Vice President Joe Biden has chosen California Senator Kamala as his running mate for the November election.

The announcement was made in a text message to supports. The message read: “Joe Biden here. Big news: I’ve chosen Kamala Harris as my running mate. Together, with you, we’re going to beat Trump.”

Biden’s choice has been highly anticipated for months, and some are calling it the most important vice presidential nominee choice in history. Past choices have been known to sway elections.

The announcement comes months after Biden announcing that he would choose a woman to serve as his vice president. Harris is now the third woman to serve as a vice presidential nominee for a major party, following Geraldine Ferraro as Walter Mondale’s running mate in 1984 and Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate in 2008.

Harris, who previously served as California’s first Black Attorney General and currently serves as the second Black woman elected to the United States Senate, is perhaps most well known for her campaign to become the Democratic Presidential Nominee earlier this year, when she competed against more than 20 other candidates, including Former Vice President Biden. Harris brings years of experience in law, policy, and criminal justice to the ticket. During her time in the Senate, Harris has focused primarily on judicial reform and governmental reform. Harris drew attention for her controversial debate performance against Biden when she criticized his willingness to work with segregationists during his time in Congress and his past opposition to busing legislation that combated segregation.

Not only will Harris serve as the first woman vice president in the United States, should the ticket win the November election, but she will also be the first Black vice president as well as the first Asian American to serve in the roll.

Harris is expected to debate Vice President Mike Pence on October 7th.
