Prince William County Supervisors Enact a Landmark Affordable Housing Ordinance
Woodbridge, Va.- Today the Prince William Board of County Supervisors enacted a landmark housing ordinance that would help address the county’s growing housing challenges. The Affordable Housing Ordinance is the culmination of a multi-year effort to ensure that Prince William County remains a place where residents of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds can thrive.
This ordinance would “establish a voluntary bonus density program in exchange for the provision of affordable housing units at 50% and 80% Area Median Income; and establish a Housing Trust Fund to provide gap financing in support of affordable housing production.” The ordinance seeks to increase the supply of available affordable housing units.
Supervisor Margaret Angela Franklin, Woodbridge District, who initially issued the directive to create an affordable housing program for the county, has consistently provided leadership on the issue of housing affordability. According to Supervisor Franklin,” We are committed to ensuring that every resident-whether a teacher, service industry worker, or health care professional, -has access to affordable housing options that allow them to live and work in our community.”
“This is a huge step forward for Prince William County,” said Board of County Supervisors Chair At-Large Deshundra Jefferson. “Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, including Prince William’s essential workers. This ordinance is not just about buildings – it’s about people, families, and the future of our community. We are creating real, long-term solutions that will help address the growing need for affordable housing.”
According to Vice Chair Bailey, “This is a pinnacle moment in our county to make sure we are continuing to serve our community at the highest level. I congratulate the board on the vision, dedication, and commitment that we have collectively shown over the past several years to get to this point. So, to the citizens of Prince William County, allow us to continue to serve you in greater ways, in better ways, and holistic ways.”
