Please help to investigate self-harm episodes and improve inhumane conditions at Red Onion Prison

by Concerned Citizens and Community Action Network

The following is a petition to Governor Glenn Youngkin by Natasha White:

“On September 15th, a horrifying incident occurred. Ekong Eshiet, out of desperation to escape continual racism and abuse, set himself on fire inside Virginia’s Red Onion prison. This desperate act was a last-resort plea for transfer to a different facility after being degraded and physically abused by correctional staff. Despite suffering from third-degree burns, medical aid was denied for three long and excruciating days. Upon his return to Red Onion, to our collective dismay, correctional officers cruelly pepper-sprayed his burns and ransacked his cell, throwing his Qur’an on the floor. Ekong has since commenced a hunger strike, adding another layer of severity to his increasing torment.

The incident with Ekong is not an isolated case. It reveals the urgent need for an immediate investigation into not only this particular case but also the recurring incidents of self-harm and the appalling conditions leading to these tragedies at Red Onion Prison. There is an urgent call for transparency regarding the use of solitary confinement and the prison’s mental health policies.

Furthermore, we demand more than the bare minimum for incarcerated individuals; we seek humane treatment and respect for their basic rights and dignity. It’s not just about Ekong Eshiet, it’s about the abuse of human rights happening behind the iron bars that continues to push incarcerated folks past their breaking point.

Everyone deserves empathy, respect, and fair treatment, even those who are incarcerated. Please make your voice heard by signing this petition and standing up for those who are vulnerable and disenfranchised by the horrific practices being allowed by the Virginia Department of Corrections.”

Please sign this petition for investigation and proper treatment of detainees at Red Onion State Prison. Eleven Adults in Custody set themselves on fire in an act of desperation, because of the conditions, sighting racism, prolonged solitary and torture.
