Although the weather was not too frightful, the scene on Main Street in Virginia’s oldest town was certainly delightful.

Yesterday, the town of Dumfries celebrated the holiday season with the 49th annual Christmas Parade. In what has become a December tradition, the residents gathered together to see the beautiful displays which began on Williamstown Road and proceeded to the John Wilmer Porter Building. This year’s theme was “Holiday Movies,” honoring the great Christmas films of yesteryear and today.

The festivities kicked off with the Freedom High School ROTC marching in procession. Then, the Saunders Middle School step team electrified the atmosphere with a rousing step performance, followed by the SMS cheerleaders. From there, the Dumfries Town Council, along with several other dignitaries, were present, handing out candies and speaking to those in attendance.

Of course, no parade in Dumfries could be complete without the spirit, energy and rhythm of Bowie State University’s Symphony of Soul, who played an amazing rendition of Michael Jackson’s ‘Off the Wall.’ Shortly thereafter, there was a North Pole visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus as they closed out the parade on their special float.
