Add Your Voice: Prince William County’s Environmental Justice Plan

by Kenny Boddye, Occoquan District Supervisor

In November of 2020, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors passed my resolution to adopt a set of Climate Mitigation and Resiliency Goals that signaled our intention to become a leader in the fight against the Climate Crisis. Passage of that resolution led to the creation of our Office of Sustainability and the establishment of a Sustainability Commission; both are tasked with the development of a Community Energy and Sustainability Master Plan (CESMP) to meet these goals.

In reality, this is an Environmental Justice Plan. Alongside providing a roadmap to cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and a transition to relying on clean energy, the plan calls for making our most at-risk communities more resilient against extreme weather conditions, flooding, and protecting them from other byproducts of fossil fuel use and climate change.

It’s an ambitious plan, and it’s time to hear from you on it.

Last week, the Office of Sustainability released a draft of the plan for public review and comment. There are two main ways to add your voice to the plan’s priorities:

  1. Submit your feedback directly here by September 15th.
  2. Participate in the next Virtual Town Hall on September 14th by registering here.

As Virginia’s second largest county, and it’s most diverse, we have a responsibility to do our part in fighting climate change and achieving environmental justice. Add your voice to how we get there.
