Qasim Rashid Heads into VA01 Congressional Race with Surging Momentum

One of the closest races in last night’s Virginia primaries was in the VA01 Congressional District, where Qasim Rashid, human rights lawyer and Democratic candidate for Congress, clinched the nomination in the district’s Democratic primary. Rashid bested 2018 nominee Vangie Williams, a strategic planner and longtime resident of King George.

“Vangie is a problem solver,” said Rashid. “She’s helped make our community better, and the residents of this district have a deep respect for her. I’m honored to work alongside her to flip this district.” Regarding the incumbent, Rashid declared that Republican Congressman Rob Wittman’s “time is up. We’re in the middle of a public health crisis. Even though he holds a degree in health policy, he refuses to be a leader and protect his constituents and lead with integrity. We need a congressman who will advocate for the health and economic success of working families and do everything possible to keep us safe. As a human rights lawyer, I’m committed to advocating for vulnerable communities and demanding supreme justice. We will work to make that change happen in November.”

With that, Rashid expressed profound gratitude for all who helped his campaign get to this point. “Thank you to my incredible team who made this outcome possible. I’m amazed by the fantastic turnout tonight, and it shows that folks are fired up for change. This was a team effort, but we’re not done yet. There’s a lot of work to do before November.”

Rashid also discussed the reasons for his candidacy. “Our campaign is based on service, leadership, and compassion through action. Right now, we’re not seeing enough of that in Washington. Our message to all residents of the 1st District—Republican, Independent, and Democrat—is that we have an opportunity to work together to put country above party, and lead with compassion and civility. I’m excited to continue the work of earning the trust, votes, and support of this district’s constituents.”

As he heads into the general election, overall reaction on social media was positive about his chances of winning against his Republican opponent come November. One Tweeter said to the PW Perspective today in response to the victory, “Rashid will represent everyone in CD1. No one can legitimately say that Rob Wittman is doing the same. Rashid will listen; Wittman doesn’t. This is the first time I have been represented by someone who ignores his constituents. That can’t be erased in 4 months. #teamrashid
