Football Friday: Northern Virginia Rampage returns for their second season

“Set your goals high, and don’t stop til you get there,” Bo Jackson

If there’s one thing that Vincent “Bo” Jackson knew, it was how to compete at the highest level on the gridiron. That’s exactly what the Northern Virginia Rampage semi-professional football team plans to do as another year is upon us.

Despite the challenges of last year adjusting to playing in Major League Football, the team looks to get their season off on the right track as they face the Connecticut Falcons in Saturday’s preseason opener. Longtime voice of the Rampage and Associate Head Coach Rodney Anderson released the following statement about the changes the team has undertaken.

“Rampage 2023 has undergone a multitude of changes behind the scenes,” said Anderson. “Ownership has changed hands rather seamlessly. Jason Rock is no longer the owner and Rod Anderson has moved from Head Coach to Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator.”

He continues. “Dennis Cornwell is now the owner of the Rampage and Head Coach. Cornwell is best known for his run with the Northern Neck Rivermen, in the Mason Dixon Football League where he won multiple championships as well as Coach of the Year.”

“This version of Rampage football will look decidedly different from a year ago. Several players have retired and/or moved on, so this is a complete roster overhaul. New offense, new defense, new philosophies across the board!”

The Rampage are also participating in a new league, the American Football Federation. Check out their website for more information.

“We all know that after a promising pre-season, the Rampage struggled mightily both on and off the field. The business model is solidified, and the coaching staff is second to none with Rod Anderson, Klarke Castellanos, Kris Pierce and Andeola Ogunweno pacing the sidelines. This season promises to deliver on last year’s promises and exceed the goals.”

Anderson says that the team is also playing this season to honor a fallen teammate.

“This season is dedicated to Derek Williams; a Rampage leader and brother who unexpectedly passed away this season. Williams (D-Will) to his teammates wore the number 21 and will be honored at every event. The Rampage have adorned the #21 on their helmets in tribute to their brother.”

The pre-season opener will take place on Saturday at 7pm at Potomac High School. For the rest of the season’s schedule, visit the team’s website.
