Over the past few years, Virginia’s oldest town has developed into a flourishing area, becoming a place that has attracted new businesses, hosted farmer’s markets, and even the Vice President visited last October.

As a result of their track record of success, the people of Dumfries rewarded Mayor Derrick Wood, Vice Mayor Monae Nickerson, and Councilwoman Selonia Miles with another opportunity to continue the momentum. While Nickerson and Miles did not face any opponents, Wood defeated Ebony Lofton by a 616 to 467 vote, according to Virginia Public Access Project results, and will move forward with several projects. Last night at Padrino’s II in Dumfries they celebrated along with community members and other elected officials

Nickerson, who along with Miles was instrumental in creating the expungement clinic, addressed the crowd about the support they received. “Once again, Dumfries showed up and showed out. We are celebrating because of one thing: promises made, promises kept. We did what we said were going to do and will continue to do so.”

Afterwards, Mayor Wood showed his appreciation for the victory, and promised to deliver on future goals. “We started off with a vision ten years ago to make Dumfries a destination place, and that’s been the driving mission of making it a place that people drive to, and not drive through. When you have a solid vision that people see, and then gravitate to, they collectively come together to get results for Dumfries. There’s still a lot to do, but we will continue to roll up our sleeves and set the example.”

Miles spoke with the PW Perspective on what it meant to be re-elected. “It honored me the first time that they elected me in 2018, but to be re-elected means that the community trusts in me, and it is an honor to represent them from now on. One thing we would like to do is continue the Route 1 widening project, and also get the funds to take care of Quantico Creek, so we can expand the waterfront.”
